Research shows that the older we get, the more difficult it is to establish new relationships. This is especially true for persons who have experience some degree of isolation or deterioration of their mental state. These individuals often find it difficult to trust and are suspicious of new individual who come into their lives. This can be complicated by the side effects of certain medications. These medications often amplify the normal results of aging. Many individuals report being in a state of daze and have issues with focus and concentration. They often show a lack of interest and require a more concentrated approach to engage them in activities such as communicating with others and focusing on activities like reading or games.  

Recommended Visits:

  • Month One: Four monthly visits for the purpose of establishing the relationship between the companion and client. Most seniors, especially those with memory deficits or behavioral health concerns are highly resistant to new relationships. By increasing the numbers and frequencies of the first visits, it increases the opportunities for developing rapport with the client. Thereby increasing the chances of establishing a successful relationship.  
  • Month Two: Three monthly visits for the purpose of maintaining the gains established in Month One. These visits can be used to reinforced with the client the purpose of the visits along with planning on-going activities.
  • Month Three and Forward: Two visits per month. This is the most effective schedule for moving forward. It satisfies the need for consistency and to maintain rapport.
